and NOW they want to make sure the word "sale" is not mentioned, rather "new client special"

wondering if you have any data or articles I could read about the best vocabulary in marketing Shane  ? My instinct says "sale" but it would be nice to have research to back my reasoning. 

At the level they're spending on Facebook you will never see a statistically significant difference in just the text. 

They were spending $2,000 not long ago and only dropped to $1,500 which is still more than other campaigns we have for other clients.

You need hundreds if not thousands of conversion events to judge statistical significance. Text minimally influences performance on Facebook, especially just one word of the text.
