1. What kind of conditions are ketamine mostly used for?

Depression, anxiety, PTSD, suicidal ideation, can be used to augment psychotherapy.

2. What to expect during ketamine treatment? Is there a consultation first?

We do an initial consultation over the phone to see if they are a good candidate, answer any questions, let them know what to expect. When they come in for the treatment, they will be in a private room, they can bring a friend or family member if they want. In most cases, we recommend intramuscular, so they won’t have to be attached to an IV, but we can do an IV per patient preference. IV infusion provides for a slower induction and the ability to stop the infusion, in most cases the difference is minimal. 

3. What are the results people see from this treatment? Do you have any reviews from patients we could use?

Reduction in depressive symptoms and anxiety, some people report like their brain has been “reset”, and they feel lighter. Less ruminations. We don’t have reviews because we have never requested any, but we can get some. 

4. Experience and short bio of people involved in administering ketamine treatment. 

Austin Francom, APRN, FNP

Austin is a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner through the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). He started his work in health care at Volunteers of America social detox and the University of Utah’s Neuropsychiatric Institute while obtaining undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Sociology. 

After starting a career in nursing, with experience largely in mental health and critical care, he earned a master’s degree in nursing from Westminster College. He has been practicing in the Salt Lake Valley in primary care since 2013. Austin continues to work at UNI as an advanced practice clinician. In 2015, he began working full time in family practice at Summit Primary Care. 

Candace Curzon, LCSW

Candace graduated from the University of Utah with a BS in Psychology and a Masters of Social Work in 2012. She worked at the crisis center at UNI and on the inpatient psychiatric unit at LDS Hospital. She opened Theory and Method counseling in 2016. 

They began Therapeutic Alternatives in February 2019.

5. What makes your office stand out to other offices offering this treatmentWe use a combination of a medical provider along with an experienced trauma therapist. We offer a non clinical experience, as we believe the set and setting is important with the use of this medicine. 6. Anything else you would like us to mention in the copy? 

We believe that the benefits of ketamine treatments are maximized in conjunction with therapy. We offer a safe environment with experienced clinicians that know these benefits.
